Shimano 6 speed shifter repair

Unless you ride a fixie bike or have no need to get out of 2nd gear the odds are you're probably going to need your shifters at some point. Since the shifters get used so often and have so many components directly connected to them there are times when they have a tendency to go bad.

One of the biggest problems you'll encounter during a ride is a stuck shifter which could not only leave you in the wrong gear, could impede your bicycle altogether. Follow these tips to fix a stuck shifter and to keep on cruising. Over time the shifters will start to break down but they don't need to be instantly replaced, just cleaned. Many times gunk, grime, and debris from the road will get lodged into your shifter and prevent it from cycling through the gears as it should.

There are two methods to take depending on the type of shifter your bike employs - some allow you to take apart a panel and gain easy access inside but others most require you to cut the adjoining cable. Bicycle cables are relatively inexpensive and cutting them might be a more cost-effective option than opening and doing damage to an entire shifter mechanism. Once you've snipped the cable on the stuck shifter, you can drag the entire piece out so that you can open up the cover and gain access to the inside.

Once you get the cover off the shifter you'll probably easily find the problem. Unfortunately you need that cover off to diagnose. Once you open up the shifter cover you can engage it to see what the problem actually is. One very common problem is a sluggish and sticky pull that doesn't pop back into place as it should. There is an easy fix to this as you spray some brake cleaner or lubricating liquid into the affected area and work the pull back and forth to get it loose.

The fix takes a mere seconds but unfortunately you need to access the interior to solve the problem, making your cables collateral damage in the process.

Often the pull that is supposed to bounce back into place is too covered in grime to function properly.

How To: Adjust Shimano Rear Derailleurs

Once you've got access to the interior of the shifter, you might as well re-lubricate it with some White Lightning or any other type of chain fluid just to coat and protect it. Replace the cover and shift the gears into place so that the bike cable can be rethreaded.

Be sure to check out our video on how to re-thread the cable for detailed, accurate instructions to get your bike back in proper shifting condition.

Bicycles Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people who build and repair bicycles, people who train cycling, or commute on bicycles. It only takes a minute to sign up. Presently I'm able to ride my bike only in 5th and 6th gears. I cannot turn the shifter it's too tight to move the chain to lower gears.

The low stop-screw is all right and it was working till yesterday and I did not make any adjustments to it. But unable to use the shifter to do that as the cable is too tight to be pulled and I'm afraid of breaking the cable.

There are several things that could have gone wrong, some listed in previous answers. But one question to start with: What sort of shifter do you have? Shimano SIS is normally a thumbshifter but your description sounds as though it might be a twist grip or push-button shifter. The problems for each can be slightly different. All of the following will be easier if you can lift the rear wheel off the ground so that you can spin the pedals and change gear while you experiment.

Flipping the bike upside down so it's resting on the saddle and handlebars is sometimes the only way to do this. Since you have more than one gear working, the cable moves in the housing and is probably still intact. It may have frayed at a bend and be jammed up, with just enough movement to let you use two gears.

Be careful because if the derailleur is bent this may cause it to move into the rear wheel, potentially damaging the wheel or derailleur. The gears should change.

Cholla art

Work out which cable changes the rear derailleur and see if that gives you the full range of gears. Next, shift to the lowest gear you can, stop the rear wheel, and pull quite hard on the cable.

With thumbshifters and twist grips, pull hard enough so that the gear lever moves to the highest gear. With rapidfire this won't happen so just pull as firmly as you think is reasonable. This does two things: if the cable is frayed, it will hopefully snap; if there's a sticky point somewhere in the system, it will probably give way.

If the problem is just the cable sticking in the housing and you don't want or can't afford to replace it, lubricating the cable will often solve the problem for a while at least. Most solvent-based chain lubes will do this just fine. A bent derailleur can often be straightened, and with a 6 speed, if it looks straight it usually is.

If you break it off while bending it back you haven't lost much, since the alternative is buying a new one. If it does bend back you win. If the derailleur just won't shift far enough any more, you'll need to check for more subtle problems. I'm not sure I can talk you though those. The easy option is, of course, to take it to your LBS.

It should take the mechanic about 30 seconds to work out where the problem is, and they will either bend the derailleur back or replace the broken part. Unfortunately old, cheap gear systems are usually not repairable or worth repairing. The good news is that replacements are cheap.

The bad news is that if you bought the bike second hand, new replacement parts will probably cost as much as the bike. Check the cables where they are stopped on the frame. It sounds like a section of housing has either pulled out of the stop, or likely, the inner wires have split the cable ferrule and have slipped through the housing stop.Adjusting the shifting on a bike means that the tension in the cable connecting the shifting mechanism to the rear derailleur must be tightened or loosened.

Cable tension is altered near the shifting lever that is integrated into the handlebar brakes on road bikes or on the grip of mountain bike handles.

Shimano Bike/Bicycle Shifters

Pull back the rubber housing on the the brake hood to expose the pivot point on the brake handle where the shifting cable is inserted. Loosen the cable barrel adjustment nut, which is located between the brake hood and the rear derailleur. Shift the bike through all gears to check for noise and ease of shifting. Repeat the process of loosening the barrel adjuster and tightening or loosening the cable as necessary to achieve the level of tension desired.

Remove the small set screw, using a hex or Allen wrench, that holds the cable in place. The cable should now move freely. Shift through all of the gears to test the tension and make sure that the chain moves smoothly from gear to gear.

If not, remove the set screw and readjust the cable tension again. If several adjustments cannot fix the problem, the cable may be worn. Take the bicycle to a qualified repair shop to have the cable replaced.

Before you try to adjust the rear derailleur, look closely to make sure it is not bent. Many times, particularly on mountain bikes, the exposed derailleur can get hit and knocked out of shape or alignment.

The map provided by Nordic Visitor was a fantastic resource. Then, our booked excursions and points of interest along the way were marked in orange, with written details added at the side.

This made it easy for use to reach our excursions at the right times and directed us to great places for homemade ice-cream, lobster dinner, and scenic delights. I can't say enough good things about our experience with Nordic Visitor.

They thought of everything beforehand--as a result, I had a stress-free, fun-filled vacation with no negative surprises. It was the perfect blend of independence, comforts through great accommodations in easy locations, and the help of getting to and from the airport was super. Just enough to take away the hassles and give me time to enjoy the location and adventure. Would not change a single thing. Our guide Christina was very knowledgable of culture and history.

We had never heard of Nordic Visitor before we booked but found them on the Internet when we were researching holidays to Iceland. We particularly liked the opportunity to contact our consultant on a toll free number in advance to discuss our requirements.

The consultant was able to adapt the tour in the brochure to meet our needs and was very prompt in contacting us with a bespoke itinerary and a quote. We were very pleased with the documentation we received on arrival. The map of Iceland and the itinerary were particularly useful, especially with suggestions for activities. We had said that we were interested in hiking and we were given ideas on potential areas to explore.

Thank goodness for the phone that was provided. We had no bad experiences. Wonderful staff at all locations.
